What Is CNC Milling?

With the rapid development of social production, science and technology, various products have become increasingly sophisticated and require frequent modification. The products that need to be processed by milling machines are also involved in a wider range of industries. Milling machine parts produce at Weimi are used in the automotive industry, construction industry, medical equipment, and more.

CNC milling machine processing is a common cold metal working method. The difference from turning is that during milling, the tool rotates at high speed under the driving of the spindle, while the workpiece is relatively stationary. CNC can process complex shapes and features it’s mainly vertical, horizontal and gantry milling machines.

CNC milling machine processing is also one of the most commonly used processing technologies at Weimi. It is the process of removing material from a workpiece with a rotating tool. CNC milling machines are usually classified according to the number of axes. Weimi has a total of 72 CNC milling machines, including 3, 4 and 5-axis and other commonly used precision machinery. It can process workpieces of a maximum size of 850mm x 500mm.

As tools are complex and generally multi-edged, milling can process flat surfaces, grooves, spiral, tooth and other surface finishes and designs.

Depending on the milling method, the milling cutter can complete the cutting in different ways. In horizontal milling, the plane is formed by the cutting edge on the outer surface of the milling cutter; in vertical milling, the plane is formed by the end edge of the milling cutter. Milling results in higher cutting speeds and therefore higher productivity.

The milling machines have a high processing accuracy and stable processing quality. The automatic tool changing function of the CNC milling machine can very effectively reduce the number of clamping times of the workpiece, reduce or eliminate positioning errors caused by multiple clamping, and improve machining accuracy. Also, the automatic tool change function of the CNC milling machine can very conveniently and effectively reduce the positioning and tool setting errors and can complete the parts of each part in the process of one clamping and one-time tool setting.

Milling machine processing can also improve economic benefits. A CNC milling machine is a machine tool that concentrates the functions of milling, drilling, tapping machines and other equipment. Therefore, Weimi often chooses milling machines to customize those parts that require more precision and larger product sizes to meet strict tolerances.

What Are The Most Common CNC Milling Problems (And How Do We Solve Them)?

1) What to do if your processing plane is not flat

To compensate for an uneven surface and produce a high-quality result, we use high-performance cutting oil. This ensures the machines are running at optimal capacity, allowing them to meet the project specification and overcome issues with uneven processing planes.

2) How to remove burrs on the surface or sides of your finished product

To ensure we achieve a perfect result every time, we remove all burrs from the sides and surface of any parts we manufacture. Commonly, people assume they can remove workpiece burrs with a file, however, this can affect the accuracy and size of the workpiece and is not recommended. Instead, we solve this problem by paying attention to the tools we are using and ensuring they are calibrated and sharp enough to work with. Alongside this, we plan for the order in which stages should be completed: starting with processing the surface first and then sides, followed by the surface again. This ensures there are no burrs and only clean edges – which is especially useful when manufacturing parts that cannot be polished post-production.
