There are 3 categories of steel according to the level of carbon content:

(1).Low carbon steel: carbon content is generally less than 0.25% (mass fraction);

Heat treatment, annealing and steel normalizing

Heat treatment of steel refers to a process of changing the structure of the steel in the solid state in aim to obtain the required properties by:

1. heating

2. heat preservation

3. cooling

Classification :

(1). Overall heat treatment (annealing, normalizing, quenching, tempering);

(2). Surface heat treatment (flame heating surface quenching, induction heating and surface quenching, laser heating and surface quenching, etc.);

(3) .Chemical heat treatment (carburizing, nitriding, etc.).

Annealing and normalizing

Main purposes:

(1) Adjusting the hardness for cutting (170HBS ~ 250HBS)

(2) Eliminating residual stress and preventing deformation and cracking;

(3) Improving structure and mechanical properties;

(4) Preparing for the final heat treatment.

Annealing is known as a heat treatment process in which the metal is heated to an appropriate temperature for a certain period of time and then slowly cooled (furnace-cooled). Annealing can be divided into full annealing, isothermal annealing, spheroidizing, homogenizing annealing, stress relief annealing and so on (according to the composition and purpose of the steel).

Normalizing is a heat treatment process that heats steel to above Ac3 (or Accm) (30 ~ 50)°C  and keeps it cool for a appropriate time and then cools it in still air. The normalizing structure is pearlite + ferrite in equilibrium. (When the carbon content is 0.25% ~ 0.60%).


The main differences between normalizing and annealing are as following:

(1).Different cooling speeds;

(2).The microstructure after normalizing is relatively fine.It improves the annealing strength and hardness. Production cycle is short and the operation is simple.
